Monday 22nd February
6.30pm-8.30pm
Venue: Dugdale Centre, Enfield
This event is for anyone wanting to put on a show or project in a space that isn't already a gallery. The event will address crucial questions in getting a space up and running - How do you find a space? What do you need to insure? And, of course, why am I doing it?
The gallery system can be a complicated and difficult area to break into for the first time, and many artists choose instead to set up their own temporary or permanent gallery spaces instead. An ‘artist run space’ can generate publicity for your own work as well as provide a hub for other artists to meet and network with each other, strengthening professional relationships and creating a platform for more experimental work to be shown. Outside of the constraints of the traditional gallery system, artist run spaces provide a valuable opportunity for individual practitioners to show their work, improve their administrative skills, get to know what the traditional gallery sector is like and improve their future prospects for exhibitions.
This course will cover all aspects of setting up an artist run space, look at the advantages and potential pitfalls of such an activity, taking participants through the practical and philosophical reasons for embarking on this kind of project. The course will be led by Russell Martin, an experienced visual artist and writer who has set up and run two artist run spaces in London over the past ten years. Russell also works with Artquest, the capital’s leading advice and information provider for individual visual artists and craftspeople.
Advisors will be on hand to help artists create a plan and solutions for their projects. Katie Schwab and Roger White work with Raw Canvas at Tate Modern, running peer-led activities and workshops for young people. They are in the process of setting up a creative project space in a disused travel agents for young people in Southwark called 'Twenty For Harper Road'. Roger and Katie are both practising artists and Katie also co-runs the LimaZulu Project Space in north London.
Clare Moloney is a writer and freelance arts consultant.
